Plant Dormancy

Our Plantsman Manuel has his say on leaving perennials and not cutting back until spring:

A gift for the winter – We have to accept the fact that dormant and dry plants in winter are beautiful and attractive, a garden with empty borders is not. Nothing is sadder and more insignificant than emptiness. Plants that remain erect with sturdy stems and inflorescences are a gift that the moment offers us. What maintenance can perennial herbaceous plants with winter interest have? None, they give us beauty and color of a superfine elegance without asking for anything in return, when the summer starts again they will need a cleaning or a cut of the little that is left from the past winter, others should not be touched just as normally in nature are treated. Miscanthus sinensis ‘Variegatus’ and weeds mixed with grasses in the post.
