Manuel Cover, our Plantsman and lead gardener has a few words on his visit this summer to RHS Kew gardens.
“Grasses, grasses and grasses – What a beautiful end-of-summer memory at kew Gardens, a lot to see and discover while walking along the routes and inside the wonderful greenhouses, if I have to choose a moment of the visit that struck me most certainly the Grass Garden. I love the Poaceae and this is now clear, at that moment they were at their maximum flowering and some were now maturing by changing colours and shapes. I want to share with you this wonderful trilogy of grasses: Stipa ichu, Calamagrostis brachytricha and Miscanthus sinensis. We will see some winter aspects further on.”
Grasses are becoming a integral part of many plant designs due to their resilience to tough weather conditions such as prolonged drought conditions in the summer – and also their ability to thrive without much care, attention or maintenance. They also offer very unique and characteristic winter interest to commercial and domestic properties.
