The Spirea is a shrub widespread in old gardens and frequently used also in public green areas. Spirea resists winter frosts and city pollution without problems; but does prefer a half-shade exposure position in the garden.
Its name derives from the Greek speira, which means string tie, from the custom of the ancients to use its flowering branches to make crowns and garlands; in fact the curved branches of S. veitchii in spring are completely covered with tiny white flowers. Spirea is easily multiplied by shoots that are born at the base of the plant.
